Sensory Swimming Pools

Audio and Lighting takes the advantages of a Hydrotherapy Pool to a new level.

The Concept
An interactive Sensory Hydrotherapy pool for special needs has been found to be greatly advantageous for a wide range of disabilities. Place a person with special needs in a Sensory Pool, where the troubles of the outside world are completely absent, present them with warmth, therapeutic music, the sensation of weightlessness and attention grabbing moving colours and shapes, and then add the ability for the person to actually make things happen that are so dramatic that they cannot be missed - you have the building blocks of real progress.

Interactive Hydrotherapy System for Special Needs, London

It Really Works
Both children and adults become interested in the Sensory Pool environment - the overactive can be calmed, the inactive become interested and the partially sighted can see the vivid moving colours.

The special needs client and one-to-one carer or therapist can slowly move through the water to encourage movement, following the illuminated images that travel across the Hydrotherapy pool or they can swim with Dolphins whilst watching the pool slowly change colour. The whole room can become interactive by the use of task and reward methods - by applying light pressure to a
floating switch, you or a client can change the whole colour of the room or fill the room with moving images. The  decorationof the room should be white or magnolia so that it acts as a projection screen, for the images that are projected on the wallsand ceiling for clients who can only float on their backs. You can even change the colour of the hydrotherapy pool simply by making a noise.

For those with severe special needs, this is probably the most pleasant environment that they have ever experienced, even if all they can do is lay in the water and enjoy it!

Premier Solutions will work with you.

To convert an existing indoor swimming pool, or Jacuzzi for sensory / Hydrotherapy use. Alternatively, if you are having a brand new pool constructed we will co-operate with the pool builders to ensure that the installation of the sensory equipment goes smoothly once the pool itself is ready.

Our quotation can then be regarded as a "Starting Point" for further discussion between Premier Solutions and you to ensure that we fully understand your teaching methods and care requirements.

It is important that the room is painted a white or magnolia colour; as white reflects all other colours, it acts as a projection screen to give the best results of colour mixing lights and image projection.

Regulations for Hydrotherapy Pools

Premier Solutions pay careful attention to the
regulations regarding the proximity of electricity to water. These regulations are always taken into account when preparing plans and proposals.

Sensory Pool Quotation
Working plans and suggested layouts are produced for your Sensory Pool along with a detailed formal quotation. The symbols used on your plan will also appear on the quotation, next to the relevant sensory products to enable you to identify which products are fitted where, what they really look like and their function.
Scale drawings of your Hydrotherapy Pool will give you a visual indication of how your Sensory pool will look including some of the projected images.

Once your final Hydrotherapy Pool specification has been approved and we have received your official purchase order, Premier Solutions will start to turn your Sensory Pool quotation into reality.
All lighting effects are specially selected to withstand condensation and the effects of chlorine. Particular attention is paid to the electronic circuits to ensure that they will work in the high humidity atmosphere of a Sensory Pool.

All of the Hydrotherapy controls that you need are mounted at the poolside and can also interact with floating switches. All of the very low voltage, touch sensitive controls are extremely easy to use. This means that you never need to leave the pool area to select a sensory effect or music selection. (Poolside music selection is via infra-red remote control). You are not expected to learn how to work complex controllers or computers. Full staff training is included in your installation and the controls are so easy to learn that it will take just 20 minutes to learn how to operate the whole system.
Premier Solutions Floating switches will allow the users to activate selected effects without getting out of the water. Floating switches work by radio signals and have no electrical connection. The Floating switches can be placed on a pool float in the water or supported by a carer or even fastened to the side of the pool with Velcro. A light touch from you or the client is all that is necessary to activate the sensory effects. Exactly which functions you wish the interactive floating switches to activate, can be set at point of programming and can be changed at any time if desired Floating switches for use in Hydrotherapy pools for special needs

All sensitive sensory control equipment is installed in a dry room away from the pool. (This could be the plant room). The controls are kept in a safe lockable cabinet and you have no need to learn how to work the equipment in the locked cabinet.

A sound system is an essential part of the hydrotherapy experience and because of this we do not recommend the use of domestic Hi-Fi units for commercial or professional applications. With reliability an overriding consideration we have not found it wise to use Hi-Fi “music centres” as should a fault develop with the amplifier or CD player or with any of the controls the whole system will fail leaving the installation with no source of music or speech. Also most domestic Hi-Fi units do not offer a microphone facility, making them unsuitable for "voice therapy" purposes. Water resistant loudspeakers are used to ensure maximum reliability.

Supervisors Poolside Control Panel

Carer's Control Panel for Sensory Rooms

To give the supervisors of the Sensory pool control over the products located with in, an "RTP" control panel is installed. The system is designed for simplicity and ease of use; your supervisors do not have to learn how to work a computer or how to write programs.

All supervisor controls are installed in the pool room ensuring that you never have to leave the client alone. The main control cabinet will be located in a seperate room away from the pool.

Optical Haze Machine
We recommend that an optical hazer be installed in your hydrotherapy Pool to enhance the light beams created by the sensory projectors. This is especially beneficial to clients who can only float on their backs, to see the coloured light beams and interact with them. The hazer allows the projected images to be visible in 3D in the air and unlike a fog machine, a hazer does this with millions of water molecules suspended in the air that are almost invisible to the eye. This reduces the perceived danger of the haze being mistaken for smoke with the consequent anxiety of fire and also removes the sudden cloud of smoke produced by a fog machine. The haze will not affect the PH balance of the pool water, essential for the health of the occupants.

The optical haze machine is mains powered, so the machine cannot be installed in the pool room itself. We will install the hazer in an adjacent room, in a custom made cabinet, that will vent through a small grill (aided by a fan), into the Hydrotherapy Pool.
The haze system uses the natural ventilation of the room and so it is essential that the machine be installed at the opposite end of the room from the ventilation extraction.

Haze Liquid
The haze liquid supplied is a water-based liquid, especially designed to suspend water molecules in the atmosphere for a long time. It is colourless, odourless, and non-flammable. The liquid leaves no residues or contamination and a full COSH toxilogical report is available by request, that shows the content and test results of the haze fluid supplied.

Programming
Finally, when your Hydrotherapy Pool system has been installed, a Premier Solutions programmer will work on site to program all the lighting effects to work within the size and shape of your pool, programming with you to ensure that the sensory effects do exactly what you want them to do to in your Hydrotherapy Pool. Premier Solution’s programmers are highly experience and will help by recommending effects that have already been proven in other Hydrotherapy installations.

Once programming is complete you will be given a "memory card", as a backup, to keep in a safe place. The memory card will contain all of your software enabling anyone to restore your programs at the touch of a button.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHY DO I NEED A "HAZE MACHINE" & WHAT IS IT?
A Haze machine is not absolutely necessary but a haze machine puts a fine mist of millions of water molecules into the air. These molecules act as a projection screen for the lighting. Without haze you would only see an image where a light beam hits a hard surface. With haze the whole beam of light is visible in 3D and gives the illusion of a solid beam of colour crossing the pool. The fluid used in the machine is almost all distilled water with a trace element of carbohydrate (food) to add a slight white appearance. It is non-toxic and does not affect the PH balance of the pool. (Full safety data report available). These machines give off only a fine haze that can be virtually invisible to the eye and should not be confused with the smoke or fog machines commonly used in night clubs and discos.

DOES THE POOL NEED TO BE "BLACKED OUT"
During sensory sessions with effects lighting it is necessary to "Black Out" the pool. This can easily be done by installing simple black roller blinds to all windows, skylights and glazed doors. When black out is not required these can simply be rolled back to return the pool to normal daylight. (DO NOT use Vertical or Venetian blinds or any other colour than black.) If you do not need a particular window, then they can simply be painted out or fitted with a blackout film. We can provide you with contacts for roller blind suppliers if required.

CAN I HAVE A SAY IN WHAT THE LIGHTING DOES?
Of course! Your installation will include at least 16 hours of professional programming. During that time you can talk to the programmer and request any particular lighting effects that you would like and he will try to include all of your requests into the programming.

WOULD YOU PROGRAM CHANGES FOR US?
Yes. You can call Premier Solutions at any time and book a programmer (at extra cost) to change the programs or add new ones as the need arises.

HOW MUCH DOES ALL THIS COST?
There is no fixed cost. Every pool is different and every budget is different. We will talk frankly with you about how much you can afford and then design a system around your needs and budget so that it may be possible for you to add additional sensory effects at a later date. So don’t worry if you can’t afford everything at once.
